Honey has been used for generations as a remedy against different ailments. The product has a discernible sugar component, but some people believe that not all sugars are created equal; and this one, at least in certain instances can actually be beneficial.

What are some of the conditions this syrupy substance is purported to help? Let’s look at a few.

Immune System. If our immune system is weakened, it becomes easier to contract various illnesses. Honey is believed to strengthen the immune system, likely because of the nutrients it contains.

Energy. Want a shot of energy? Give honey a try. This natural sugar is thought to provide almost instantaneous results. And, besides an energy boost, it also supports exercise endurance.

Oral bacteria. Did Mama ever tell you to take a spoonful of honey when you had a sore throat? Well, it seem Mama might have been on to something. This pleasant-tasting sweet is known for its germ-killing properties; and, it’s even supposed to fight unpleasant breath!

Skin infections. Honey has repeatedly been used as a natural therapy for skin wounds. The low-level release of hydrogen peroxide is thought to be a reason it sometimes works. Certain studies have even shown that honey is a viable treatment for assorted skin conditions.

Digestion problems. Do you suffer with IBS or digestive problems? Then you may wish to try a daily dose of this bee-produced food. Why? The iron and manganese in honey is thought to support better digestion.

Toothache. A combination of honey and cinnamon distributed on top of a sore tooth is believed to sooth the pain. Actually, honey and cinnamon are considered impressive for a number of reasons.

There are other conditions that honey might help. Heart disease, high cholesterol, arthritis, and acne are believed to be a few. Naturally, first seek the counsel of a physician before attempting therapeutic measures on your own: your doctor is the best source to address any type of physical condition.

Yes, all this honey talk has likely intrigued a few minds, but commercial honey is not the type to get. It may taste pleasant, but the best kind to use for remedy purposes is raw, organic honey (it tastes yummy, too). Raw, organic honey does not undergo pasteurization; therefore, valuable nutrients remain in place.

Honey may be healing? Sweet!

Recent studies have indicated that chronic inflammation could in part be responsible for the development of diseases like cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, and rheumatoid arthritis.

What causes chronic inflammation? Assorted factors apparently are to blame. For example, toxins, stress, inactivity, poor diet, and genetics are some of the suspected culprits.

How can chronic inflammation be addressed? Here are some dietary ways to reduce the risk.

Food choices. What we put in our bodies plays a significant role in our well-being. People who regularly consume fast food, processed meats, fatty snacks, and greasy meals do not fare nearly as well on the health scale than individuals who eat more wisely. In fact, these people are leaving themselves open to an increased risk of obesity, high cholesterol, diabetes, and other unwanted conditions. In short, food matters! Which selections tend to be best? Fermented soy, leafy vegetables, assorted mushrooms, fresh fruits, extra-virgin olive oil, cold-water fish, green and black tea, nuts, and red wine (in moderation) are good choices. At the same time, it is also important to buy organic whenever feasible. As we know, organic crops are those that have not been sprayed with pesticides.

Vitamins and nutrients. Naturally, the optimal way for getting essential vitamins, minerals, and nutrients in the body is by eating whole foods: fresh vegetables and fruits are especially good choices. Still, regular access to fresh food is not always possible for some people. Because of this, high-quality supplements may be needed. Which types are best in fighting inflammation? Ones that contain vitamins C, D, and E, folic acid, selenium, carotenoids, fish oil, coQ10, tumeric or cucumin, garlic, and ginger. NOTE: Always check with your doctor before taking supplements: certain types may interfere with medication or exacerbate the effects of certain drugs (like blood thinners).

Fiber. Fiber deserves a category all its own because its benefits are amazing. Regular intake of this wonder has been thought to decrease conditions like heart disease, high cholesterol, and certain cancers. Which type of fiber is best in combating inflammation? The soluble variety like those found in beans, oat bran, lentils, apples, nuts, seeds, and strawberries. Insoluble types like those found in whole grains and wheat bran also serve a purpose because they tend to get things moving along in our digestive tract. Taking in between 25 to 35 grams of fiber per day, with approximately 2/3 coming from the soluble assortment, is thought to be positive. Interestingly, while other carbohydrates, like white flour and sugar, should be shunned as much as possible, soluble fiber carbs are definitely not bad guys.

There are other ways to minimize inflammation in addition to food. Exercise, yoga, and tossing the cigarettes (if you smoke) reinforce an anti-inflammatory diet.

Chronic inflammation? Who needs it?

Coconuts are a delightful fruit that sometimes seem hard to find. When they are located, people feel they can only indulge in small quantities because this delight is high in saturated fat. While it’s true that most saturated fats, particularly the animal variety, may not be so good for us, recent studies have suggested certain vegetable/fruit versions might not be bad after all (and neither are their oils!)

Let’s look at what the newer coconut oil info is suggesting.

Weight loss. Okay, this seems counter intuitive; a food high in saturated fat that helps us lose weight? Well, some studies suggest this is the case. Coconut oil is believed to boost the metabolism (which in turn burns calories). And, speaking of calories, coconut oil has fewer calories than some other fats. An added bonus? Enhanced energy!

Stronger immune system. Coconut oil contains antimicrobial, antibacterial, and antifungal benefits. The lauric acid in coconut oil is believed to convert into properties that work to counteract conditions like skin infections, ulcers, stomach upset, herpes, and the list goes on. Some studies have even indicated coconut oil could be beneficial for more serious conditions like HIV, AIDS, hepatitis, and syphilis.

Heart health. How is it possible that a product with over 90% saturated fat can be helpful to the heart? Again, lauric acid is believed to be the reason. Coconut oil contains around 50% lauric acid, and lauric acid helps guard against high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and assorted heart problems. It’s also alleged to help prevent arterial wall buildup (nonetheless, everything in moderation).

Skin Superstar? When applied topically, this oil is a fabulous moisturizer. Skin appears softer, younger, hydrated, and better balanced. Compared to the price of anti-aging products, it’s truly an economical way to go. Coconut oil is also thought to provide benefits for psoriasis, ringworm, age spots, dandruff, eczema, and skin infections.

Which type of coconut oil is best? Organic extra-virgin coconut oil. It can be found online and in some health food stores. It’s a fantastic skin conditioner, frying oil, and supplement.

So, what really makes this oil such a marvel? It seems to boil down to fatty acids. Many fat/oil products, whether animal or plant-based, contain long-chain fatty acids (LCFA). Coconut oil contains medium-chain fatty acids (MCFA). Studies suggest that medium-chain fatty acids are better for the body and help protect against (or address) a variety of symptoms and/or conditions. An added benefit? There does not appear to be any unpleasant side effects. Still, always check with your doctor if you are using this product for any kind of ailment.

Coconut oil? It’s definitely worth a look!

Some people experience mouth problems as they become older. These situations can be inconvenient, embarrassing, painful, and downright irritating!

What issues could occur? Here are some possibilities.

Discoloration. Repeated intake of certain foods or drinks like blueberries, cherries, tea, coffee, etc., can cause significant staining to the teeth. Because of this, it is best to clean teeth immediately after meals. Some toothpaste companies include ingredients such as baking soda to reduce surface stains. Naturally, regular flossing and brushing are extremely important when it comes to staving off discoloration, as are twice-yearly dental hygienist appointments (hygienists get teeth sparkly!).

Strange tastes. Some individuals experience an altered sense of taste as the years pass on. This can be frustrating because foods that once seemed appetizing no longer offer the same enjoyment. Certain medications can drastically affect taste in some people, so this is one possibility. At the same time, a diminished sense of smell occasionally accompanies taste alterations. If food is beginning to taste strange to you, consult with your doctor. He/she will likely strive to discover the cause. If the reason cannot be determined, then you may be referred to an ears, nose, and throat specialist. Independent of all of that, use certain nasal sprays with care. More than a few people believe their sense of smell became negatively impacted because of this type of medication.

Dentures misalignment. Dentures typically start off feeling fine but can become uncomfortable. The reason? Bone and gums change as time goes by, and what once fit properly may become loose or shifted. Bottom line? Call your dentist if your dentures are bothering you. He/she will make the necessary adjustments so they can feel great again. Do not attempt to adjust dentures on your own, you could break the appliance or end up with an even greater degree of distortion.

Chewing difficulties. Chewing difficulties can be rooted in a number of different causes. The problem might be a canker sore that will heal in a few days, a dental appliance that needs fine-tuning, tooth sensitivity because of nerve problems (and the eventual need for a root canal), loose teeth due to bone loss and periodontal disease, and a medley of other possibilities. If you feel discomfort when chewing, it is important to find out the culprit. Some seniors fail to eat the proper foods because it hurts to do so and subsequently suffer from malnutrition.

Sure, mouth maladies may increase with age, but proper care can circumvent certain problems. Now that’s something most of us can swallow!

Bunions, also know as hallux valgus, are one of the more common foot problems that affect seniors. Some believe that years of wearing heels or other ill-fitting shoes result in the condition. Although this viewpoint holds merit, it does not tell the entire story. While certain shoe types undoubtedly exacerbate the problem, thus the reason more women suffer from the condition than men, bunions often occur because of a deformity located in the structure of the foot. At the same time, a genetic component could be attached (e.g., bunions can run in families). To a lesser extent, bunions may develop because of an injury to the foot. Bunions tend to become worse with time, but modification of footwear to a roomier, more cushioned shoe allows for greater comfort and may arrest progression.

How are bunions presented? The joint at the big toe becomes enlarged, misaligned, and/or swollen. The big toe may also shift toward the second toe; this makes the foot seem wider, and certain shoes could become increasingly difficult to wear. Pain may or may not accompany bunions. When soreness is present, it occurs as intermittent to steady burning, tenderness and/or aching.

Bunions are classified into three categories: mild, moderate, and severe. Let’s briefly look at each.

Mild. Mild bunions appear as a slight bump at the big toe joint; discomfort, if present, is generally minimal. Bunions in this category are addressed conservatively. Orthotics and/or shoe modification, including footwear with strong support, are frequently the treatment of choice.

Moderate. Moderate bunions usually have a more significant bump at the big toe joint, and the larger toe may shift conspicuously toward the smaller ones. When considerable pain accompanies the situation, surgical measures are commonly explored.

Severe. Severe bunions appear quite large, and the foot looks noticeably misaligned: pain can be a major concern. Bunions of this type normally warrant surgery. It is important to mention there are different surgical methods to correct the condition,

Some people continually suffer with bunions, but there is no reason to limit what you do when help is available. Why stay indoors if you really want to be out having fun?

What should you do if you have this condition? Make an appointment with a podiatrist or orthopedic physician. He/she will assess the situation and suggest a treatment right for you. If surgery is recommended, it is wise to seek the advice of two to three different surgeons to help ensure the best approach for your type of bunion.

We will wrap up our feet trilogy next time with some useful tips to help ward off foot problems. In the meantime, it seems the stock market will keep us on our toes!

The Sun is a fiery star positioned in the center of our Solar System. Earth, at least from a life-sustaining standpoint, could not survive without it. As we know, this sphere-shaped mass gives off light and heat and is a major source of Earth’s energy (in short, it’s hot!). It is composed primarily of hydrogen and helium and possesses magnetically active fields.

The Earth takes 365 days to rotate around the Sun, but that does not mean the Sun is stationary. It also rotates, although the time it takes for rotation at its equator and poles are not the same. To get an idea of its size, it is over 100 times wider than the Earth. Still, from a star size perspective, it is probably in the average range.

What does this all mean to you? Well, the Sun deserves a great deal of respect, but it can also be damaging. Here are some thoughts to consider when you are exposed to its rays.

Limit Sun Exposure. Limiting sun exposure is important for everyone, but seniors should take special care because their skin has more years of contact (e.g., mature skin may have a greater degree of sun damage). Unfortunately, as we become older, our skin thins, and protection because even more vital. Even so, a certain measure of exposure is positive because we get most of a needed vitamin from the sun: vitamin D. Some seniors are deficient in vitamin D, so it is important to regularly have your levels checked. Having said all of that, excessive sun can lead to negative skin changes, like abnormal cell formation. In this case, too much of a good thing is not good.

Wear protective clothing. There are times you can’t avoid being in the sun for longer periods. Perhaps you have plans to participate in a walking tour or will be spending a few hours at a beach, park, lake, baseball field, or other outdoor setting. When this is the situation, protective clothing is a great way to guard against the sun’s potentially harmful rays. Long pants, a long shirt or top, and a wide-rim hat are great choices to consider. If the air is very warm, it is best to choose lightweight, light-colored, cotton clothing (it breathes better and is cooler).

Put on sunscreen. Sunscreen has been mentioned before, but it is worth mentioning again. If you are only popping your head, hands, and other exposed parts of your body outdoors for brief periods, then sunscreen may not be necessary. However, if you will be in the sun for protracted periods, even if it is cloudy but the sun is peeking through, then it makes sense to apply sunscreen. What type? Be sure to choose an SPF of 15 or above: also pick a product that protects against both UVA (long-wave) and UVB (shortwave) rays.

The Sun is a magnificent star, and without it, we wouldn’t be here. If we exercise a little caution, we can safely revel in its brilliance.

An example? Blood-seeking insects sometimes carry diseases that can be transmitted to humans. Here are two pests to especially avoid.

• Mosquitos. Mosquitos can carry a number of potentially serious illnesses. In New England, West Nile fever encephalitis has become a concern and efforts are underway in some cities and towns to address the issue. Most people bitten by infected mosquitos will not become ill. Nonetheless, individuals older than 60 and those with compromised immune systems are at greater risk. West Nile symptoms include fever, stiff neck, headache, and coma. Eastern Equine Encephalitis has also been found in some New England mosquitos, albeit in much fewer numbers. Some people bitten by EEE carriers will show no indications of the illness, but others become very sick. Early signs include brain swelling, chills, fever, and vomiting. Ways to protect against mosquito bites? Clear away any standing water from around your home, and limit your time outdoors when mosquitos are most active (e.g., dusk and nighttime). Moreover, wear long sleeves/pants and spray insect repellent on clothing, exposed skin, and hair when you are out at night (there are all-natural sprays available). Finally, do not leave windows or doors open, as mosquitos will have a perfect entryway into your home.

• Ticks. Ticks are a concern because they can carry Lyme disease and co-infections like Babesia, and Bartonella. Unfortunately, Lyme disease is fast- growing in the Northeast and increasing in other regions, as well. When Lyme is caught in the early stages, the chance for a full recovery is very good. Even so, the disease sometimes goes undetected because symptoms can mimic other illnesses. At the same time, testing methods are not always accurate, and this can also delay treatment. Lyme symptoms are varied and often determined by the system or systems the bacteria are invading (pulmonary, cardiac, brain). For example, some people experience a racing pulse upon minimal exertion and others do not. A circular rash at the bite site is often the first indication of the illness. However, not everyone with Lyme gets this rash or even knows about the bite. Other signs include diffuse rashes, rapid heartbeat, difficulty breathing, extreme fatigue, joint pain (e.g. knees, fingers, toes), neck ache or stiffness, brain fog (adding simple numbers can be difficult), nerve twitching, eye changes, vertigo, Bells Palsy, and more. Some ways to stay away from tick bites? Protect your skin when you are outdoors by wearing long pants/ tops, socks (tuck them over your pants,) and insect repellent (even spray your animals!). Also, avoid grassy or brush areas, accumulated leaves, wooded regions, and other places where ticks like to hang out in large numbers (sadly, some may even be sunbathing on your lawn). A final thought? Perform body inspections when you come inside (even do this with your animals).
Naturally, the summer is meant to be enjoyed, so no one should be afraid to revel in the warmth. Still, there are precautionary measures all of us can take to minimize our exposure to illnesses we simply do not want. A few sensible steps can help everyone stay safer.

Nuts are sometimes classified as a wonder food because they contain impressive amounts of antioxidants. As most of us know, antioxidants fight free radicals and help deter damage at the cellular level. When this takes place, the opportunity for health-threatening illnesses like cancer and heart disease become minimized

Naturally, people who have nut allergies should not partake in this hardened fruit because serious reactions may occur. For the rest of us, though, nuts are a great source of key vitamins and minerals.

“Which ones?” you ask. Let’s look at some varieties and their benefits.

Almonds. This nut is found on the almond tree and contains a healthy dose of vitamin E, magnesium, and fiber. It also provides a respectable amount of protein and certain amino acids. Some studies even indicate the regular intake of almonds could lower bad cholesterol (LDL) and bolster good bacteria in the gut.

Pistachios. Another nutrient-filled nut, pistachios are rich in oleic acid, vitamin E, potassium, magnesium, carotenes, and so much more! They are a wonderful source of energy, and they’re kind of fun to eat (particularly if still in the shell!).

Cashews. A classic nut favorite, cashews contain needed minerals like zinc, iron, copper, and magnesium; plus, they are skinnier than other nuts because they do not contain as much fat. In fact, people who regularly consume nuts (cashews included) tend to lose weight instead of gain it.

Walnuts. Sometimes walnuts are unsung heroes; people seem to think they only serve a purpose in banana bread. Yet, they are delicious in and of themselves. Furthermore, they’re a fabulous source of plant protein, vitamin E, fiber, and omega 3 fatty acids. Hmm, maybe add a few to your morning cereal?

Peanuts. Okay, these nuts are the lowly guys. They’re relatively inexpensive and not nearly as “la-di-da” as their above cousins. Even so, peanuts are tasty, nourishing, and versatile. To boot, they contain healthy fats, fiber, and B vitamins.

There are many good things that can be said about nuts. Yes, they are high in fat, but it’s mostly the unsaturated kind, which has been shown to reduce the risk of certain diseases. Moreover, they’re packed with vitamins, which often results in bolstering the immune system. Not to mention, they are high in fiber, and fiber helps people stay regulated.

Nonetheless, everything in moderation; a handful is all that is needed to realize nuts’ benefits. Also, keep in mind the salty assortment can elevate blood pressure for those with hypertension; therefore, choose unsalted if you have a propensity to this condition.

So, you want a healthy, satisfying, and delicious snack? Then go nuts!

Last week we examined a major reason for blindness in the world, glaucoma. This week we look at the leading cause: cataracts.

Last week we examined a major reason for blindness in the world, glaucoma. This week we look at the leading cause: cataracts.

Cataracts are a cloudy fluid that forms on the lens of the eye. Both eyes usually take on the condition, but it is possible that only one eye will be affected. At first, sufferers may detect a glare or blurriness and/or believe they are becoming increasingly nearsighted. Fortunately, many people in the United States have access to eye specialists who can diagnose and assess the severity of the problem. Sadly, adequate medical care is not always available in third world countries or remote areas, and people can go blind from the condition.

The development of cataracts arises for a number of reasons. Continued exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays is believed to make individuals more vulnerable to this problem. Injury, family history, some medications, and certain diseases like high blood pressure and diabetes are also thought to put people at risk. Cataracts that occur as a result of aging are called age-related cataracts. Regular eye exams are important in detecting the condition.

So, are cataracts completely preventable? Probably not. Nonetheless, there are steps that everyone can take to minimize the possibility.

Wear sunglasses. People who wear sunglasses are doing substantially more than impersonating movie stars; they are helping to protect their eyes. Be sure to choose glasses that block ultraviolet rays.

Antioxidants. Antioxidants are thought to be beneficial in thwarting cataract formation. Supplements such as vitamin A, vitamin E, vitamin C, alpha lipoic acid, and N-acetylcarnosine are ones that have shown promise.

Limit refined sugars. Sugars in the blood can be unhealthy for different health concerns, and cataract formation is on the list. This may explain why diabetics are at greater risk. Actually, minimizing refined sugars makes sense for many reasons.

Eat nutritionally and monitor calories. A nutritional diet (e.g., one comprised of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins) and portion control have shown promise in some cataract studies.

Avoid smoking. Cigarette smoke is thought to increase cataract formation in some people. Even when smokers do quit, they may still be at risk. If individuals continue to smoke, though, they will be at even greater risk. Consequently, quit smoking if at all possible; there’s nothing healthy that can come from smoking tobacco.

The treatment of cataracts sometimes takes a wait and see approach. Certain people increase their eyeglass prescription, and others use assorted visuals aids. Keep in mind that when eyesight becomes so impaired it interferes with satisfactorily seeing the world, then surgical measures may be necessary. In fact, cataract surgery is the most regularly performed surgical procedure in America, and it is generally uncomplicated and mostly painless. Luckily, many individuals who undergo the treatment fare very well and maintain nearly 20/20 to 20/40 vision. The surgery itself routinely involves replacing the damaged lens with a plastic one, and advances in the field are frequently being realized.

Seeing clearly? I think most of us want that in more ways than one!

Glaucoma is a debilitating eye disease that can lead to blindness if not properly treated. What happens? The optic nerve becomes damaged and diminishes vision. Interestingly, most people know the name of this terrible condition but not nearly as many are familiar with the particulars. Fortunately, glaucoma can usually be controlled if caught in time. Still, the symptoms often go unnoticed at first, and because of this, a certain degree of damage could occur.

Let’s look at some important-to-know glaucoma info.

Glaucoma is a major cause of blindness in America and around the world. It is estimated that in excess of 60 million people have the disease.

Many sufferers are unaware they have glaucoma in the earlier stages because there are few recognizable symptoms. Loss of peripheral vision is typically one of the first noticeable indicators. If left untreated, glaucoma sufferers could come to view life as if they are seeing through a tunnel; eventually, eyesight may go completely.

High fluid pressure is common in glaucoma. When this is the case, the pressure must be lowered to control the disease. Nonetheless, certain individuals with glaucoma have normal or even somewhat low optic pressure. At the same time, not everyone with elevated eye pressure has the condition (although these individuals should be closely monitored).

There are different types of glaucoma: two common categories are open-angle and closed-angle. Open-angle glaucoma is the most common.

Glaucoma normally occurs in individuals over 50 years of age, but some types affect juveniles.

Risk factors for the disease includes family history, severe myopia (nearsightedness), injury to the eye or eyes, diabetes, certain medications (e.g., steroids), and thinning corneas.

When glaucoma is brought upon by medication, it is often referred to as secondary glaucoma.

African Americans are at a substantially higher risk than Caucasians of developing the disease.

There are different tests eye specialists use to check for glaucoma. A visual acuity test and visual field test are two popular types.

There is no known cure for glaucoma, but it can be treated. The severity of the disease will sometimes determine the course of action. Medicines (e.g., eye drops), lasers, and surgery are all treatment options.

Treatment does not restore lost vision but often prevents further damage.

Safeguarding your precious eyesight is crucial. Therefore, eye exams are vital to detecting and arresting this progressive disease. Glaucoma leads blindness, but it usually does not have to take such a path. Regular visits with the optometrist and/or ophthalmologist can help protect your vision so you can continue to see the world around you.
